Sony RX10 IV – Auto Focus Areas, Modes, and Related Features Explained

Sony Cyber-shot RX10 IV

In this Sony Camera Video Tutorial I will cover Focus area, Focus mode, Pre-AF, Eye-AF, Back Focus, Face Detection, Center Lock-on AF, Lock-on AF, and AF Area Registration, using the Sony RX10 IV as the demo camera body.

All the recent Sony cameras work the the same way for the most part, therefore these tutorials can be applied to the Sony A9, A7r III, A7r II, A7s II, A7 II, A6500, A6300, RX1R II, RX1R, Rx10 III, RX10 II, RX10, RX100 V, RX100 IV, RX100 II, and so forth…

Sony offers several different focus modes and tons of focus related features, which you can find in the manual/ Help Guides, but I think it’s much easier to just watch a video that explains it for you.
I’m a visual learner, and until I see it done, I just don’t really get it 100%. I basically read the manual then play with the camera until I understand it as best I can, then I create the video to teach said concept, as you will see below. I hope it helps you out, and please let me know what you think!

For reference, you can click on these Sony RX10 IV guides below and just search for any given setting. It really works well and can help find a feature or setting quickly when learning the camera!

Just enter your camera model in the area provided and a page with all the available manuals will come up:

  1. question: I am new to photography. I have a new rx10m4. I am watching your video on focusing, I pressed Fn button and Area Focus is greyed out. so I reset all setting to default using the set up menu and still get message this operation is not available with automatic AF. please advise what I am doing wrong

    1. Hi Gill, Which Mode are you in? The dial on top of the camera… That feature does not work in full auto mode to my knowledge. Try P mode instead and let me know if that works?

  2. Hi Jay, I’ve had the Sony RX10IV for almost two years now and I absolutely love it. I watch your videos often when I have questions on focusing and they have been very helpful. As of late like within the past two weeks something has been happening that hasn’t happened before and it’s happening at the worst times. When pushing the shutter half way to focus it locks in place (not every time but often) even after taking the finger off the button and the green light in the lower corner flashes green and the focus square stays green. While this happens you cannot use the zoom or push any buttons. The only thing that seems to stop it is to hit the shutter button again but that doesn’t work every time so I’m very confused. I can’t figure out why it’s happening and I can’t figure out how to make it stop. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated

    1. Hi Jeffery, That sounds like a very strange problem. I honestly don’t know what would cause that. What mode are you using? AF-S or AF-C? Does it do it on both modes?

      Jay

      1. It does do it in both modes. I’ve tried everything, I thought maybe some setting I might of hit unknowingly.

      2. I just got home from work and experimented with changing it to back button focus on the AEL button. The back button feature works the focus properly. However if I do press the shutter halfway down like I’m pretending to focus or even by accident on still engages the locking part but just not focused and the square remains grey. When this happens i’m unable to use the zoom or any menu buttons. This is bizarre and I need to figure out what is going on.

      3. I did a factory reset that seems to have fixed the problem. And in the process I’ve learned back button focus which I’m diggin’

        1. Great news Jeffrey and thank you for the update!! I think the camera just got hosed up or something, which is really odd 😉 Nice work!

          Jay
