Sony does it again with another worlds first! This time the New Cyber-shot HX99 which is the “Worlds Smallest Travel High Zoom Camera”. We are talking an effective 24-720mm range in a camera that can easily fit into your pocket. Talk about a cell phone killer!! With a huge feature set and a price point of $448 you can expect these to move off the shelf fairly quick I would think.
The HX99 sensor is a pretty darn small 1/2.3″ CMOS, but this is why Sony was able to get 30x zoom out of the Zeiss lens, and keep the camera so compact. The HX99 also features UHD 4k video recording @ 30p, a 180 degree flipping high res touchscreen, and a pop-up viewfinder for those conditions where the screen just doesn’t do the job. Other features include 10fps burst shooting and a max ISO of 12800 when extended.
This camera is very similar to the RX100-series cameras, but much more affordable, has an insane amount of zoom, and is packing a way smaller sensor. The image quality is not going to be as good as the larger 1″ sensor equipped Sony RX100 VI which I just reviewed here >>, but it is still a very high quality sensor unit and lens combination despite the smaller size.
When compared to the larger 1″ sensor found in the RX100-series cameras, the smaller 1/2.3″ will not be as good in low light, and won’t have as good depth of field play. However, what you do get is absolutely incredible range in a super compact form factor! You can never get something for nothing 😉
That is about it for this quick article on the New Sony HX99 ultra compact mega zoom camera. In other news, I’m curious if Sony will announce a new APS-C Mirrorless camera soon, because the rumors are strong! I expect a new A7000 or something like that to be dropped very soon, so stay tuned for that!
