In this review I will be covering the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS G Lens via the Sony A7R IV camera body.

I’ve gotten more requests to review this lens than probably any other lens in Sony’s line-up. Thank you for your patience and I must tell you this lens did not disappoint.

The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens is a high quality all-in-one zoom lens option that is particularly good if you want to just use one lens. So, for travel and/ or family outings all your bases will be covered. You can get excellent landscapes, portraits, architecture, food, pets, video footage, and anything else you want to try and capture.

This lens features a constant f/4 aperture throughout the range and offers optical stabilization to help with slower shutter speed situations which you will inevitably have due to the slower f/4 max aperture when compared to faster f/2.8 lenses or even faster prime lens for example.

HDR Sample Photos

After I recorded the youtube video for this review I actually went out to this creepy location and took a ton of HDR Photos with the Sony A7R IV and the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens. The lens performed awesome and the versatile zoom range worked out great for this venture!

Closing Remarks

So at the end of the day I really enjoyed using the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens on the Sony A7R IV. The lens holds up to the high resolution demands of the A7R IV, and other than the distortion I mentioned in the video at the 24mm when lab testing, I would say this lens is near perfect for an all-in-one do everything option. It does not have crazy telephoto reach, but 105mm is pretty darn good and 24mm on a full frame camera is wide angle enough for almost anything. I highly recommend this lens for those looking for a very high quality all-in-one solution which is particularly good for travel and family outings for consisting of site seeing landscapes, portraits, video, and more.

Now, if you are in the market for a lens like this you must also consider the newer Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Lens which offer a variable yet faster max aperture on the wide end and significantly more reach. All this and it costs only $729 US currently. Now, I have not reviewed this new Tamron yet, but I heard from several people it’s really good and on par with the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens. Honestly I find this hard to believe, but I will get this lens for review ASAP and if you are looking for more overall range for less money it’s worth considering.

  1. I love rereading these post during my downtime. This week I’ve been wondering if this lens outperforms the Tamron 28-200 Di III RXD by a wide enough margin. This was the first lens I purchased. Because of this, I figured I wanted to invest in better glass, so I spent a lot of time finding some and wondering how I would have on my camera if there is no justification for it! Right now I’m grateful.

    1. Hi Adam and thank you for the excellent question! I do not have an answer for you unfortunately, because I have not tested the new Tamron 28-200mm yet myself, but I do plan on getting it ASAP. Based on the reviews out already, it appears to be very good for the money, but I find it hard to believe it’s better than the Sony FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS Lens as far as sharpness and build quality goes. However, Sigma has been knocking it out of the park with it’s lenses lately and the other Full Frame E-Mount Tamron Zooms have also proven to be excellent over time, so we shall see… Jay

  2. I bought this lens at the same time I bought a Sony A6400. I planned that it would be my every-day lens. But I soon realized that I didn’t want to lug the weight everywhere. So I returned it and got the APS-C 18-135mm. That too is a great lens and much lighter. Now, months later, I recently bought the Tamron 28-200 which is truly a breakthrough achievement, outperforming many expensive primes. But its weight is discouraging much use. As Yogi Bera said, “It’s deja vu all over again”

    1. Well it depends on what you are willing to carry I suppose. Some people only carry a point and shoot style camera when out and about, but others carry pro gear all the time 😉 I hear ya though Edwin! Jay
