Nikon Z6 and Z7 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Announced! Has Sony's Nightmare Finally Arrived?

All the buzz today is the announcement of the New Nikon Z6 and Z7 Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras!! This is huge news and is really going to impact Sony’s market share in the next few years I would say. This is awesome news for us Sony shooters, because Sony will be forced to let loose all the secret technology they have been potentially holding back in order to compete with the new competition!! Oh Yeah….

Basically in a nutshell, the Z7 is the 45.7mp higher resolution version and goes for ~$3400, and the Z6 is the more affordable 24mp unit which goes for ~$2000. Both these 1st generation mirrorless cameras from Nikon are coming out with pretty much all the features that matter . and are directly competing with the Sony A7R III and A7 III respectively. Unlike how Sony full frame mirrorless cameras started however, these new Nikon’s are almost at Sony’s level and even ahead in a few areas! That is extremely impressive to me and shows that Nikon really worked on these cameras for a long time before re-leasing half assed models. These units are ready to roll, and of course there is always room for improvement, but what a start!!

So what did Nikon decide to include in these new cameras that sets them apart from Sony in particular?
How about real deal weather sealing and a LCD screen on the top of the camera for starters. Two things I have been asking Sony to do since day one. Also the Nikon batteries from the D850 will fit in these cameras, so killer battery life and no need to invest in new chargers and things like that. The Z7 and Z6 also have a built in intervalometer which is a really great feature for advanced time-lapse stlye photography and video…

So what is missing from the Z7 and Z6?
They are missing Dual memory card slots which is shocking considering how well thought out and designed these cameras appear to be. Also missing the fully tilting screen for selfie style, Eye-AF, and Z Mount lenses which will take years to build up compared to what Sony is currently offering. Sony E-Mount Lens Guide this way >>

Nikon FTZ Lens Adapter

Nikon is introducing a few Z Mount lenses to launch with the new Z7 and Z6, but they have announced many more lenses to come!

First the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens which goers for ~$1000, and you can get it with the camera as a kit for less money. Also we have the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens which goes for ~$600. Lastly we have the Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens and heads up about a Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens is in development!! Manual focus only on that last lens, but wow that is crazy fast!!

A Nikon FTZ Lens Adapter similar to Sony’s LA-EA3, is also available and is going for ~$250. This way you can use all your Nikon F Mount lenses for the most part, as the new mirrorless Z Lens Mount line will have limited optics for some time. This is huge if you are a long time Nikon shooter with tons of quality F Mount glass in particular. You can also save money on this adapter by purchasing as a kit with the camera…

Closing Remarks

Well guys, what do you think? Should Sony be worried? I think they should and luckily they have a few years head start on Nikon as far as lenses go. Sony really should drop a new camera announcement that dogs these two Nikon’s within the next few months I would say…After all these years of reviewing Sony cameras and lenses, I know they holding back some technology and/ or features!!

I also think Sony should drop a another lens roadmap teaser to insure the long term future growth of the E-Mount lens line to those considering investing in the system. Nikon is know for it’s huge lens line, but Sony not so much…

If I were a Nikon shooter I would be so excited about this, and I would be saying finally, thank you Nikon for not letting us down. Of course the cameras will evolve, so Nikon left some clear areas for improvement like Dual memory card slots and a fully tilt-able screen for example. Similar to Sony, Nikon made a calculated decision to leave room for a new better more refined model in the future. A marketing strategy that is very frustrating to us users, but expected by manufactures at this point in the game… Its just the way it is.

Again, please let me know what you think below in the comments area, and have a great day!!
Jay

  1. I doubt many Sony users will jump ship to Nikon; however, if they came from Nikon and still have Nikon equipment, they might be tempted move back to a Nikon body and these first generation cameras do seem like winners right from day one!
I was a Canon fan-boy for years before moving to Sony back in 2013. I still own and use a lot of Canon lenses but would probably not be tempted to move back to Canon if they came out with a good FF body.
As for the Nikon sensors, designed by Nikon but manufactured by Sony??
    Good article.

    1. Thanks for the comments Brain!! I also have a lot of pro grade Canon Glass and depending on what they came out with I would certainly review it, but buy? I don’t think so…
As far as the Sensor, exactly! Sony makes it, but they make it to Nikon’s specs within a certain threshold. Nikon wants to be able to do certain things with the sensor that Sony might not be able to do out of the box. Basically it’s a Sony sensor though, because they make the best sensors and other manufactures can’t possible spend the money required to catch up in the development process without hurting their business model to much. Competition is fierce these days!!
      Thanks again,
      Jay

      1. I still have a soft spot for Canon, primarily because of their stellar CPS program. Was a member forever, but dropped after moving to Sony early in 2018. I’d reconsider a Canon mirrorless if it were on par with my A7III & A7RIII (kept my Canon glass). BUT, if it doesn’t have dual slots, it’d be a non-starter for me. A dumb omission IMO on Nikon’s part. None of my pro associates would shoot a job without dual slots.

        1. I do as well Chris. I absolutely love my Canon 5D Mark II and still use it from time to time for Pro work. It’s such an awesome camera, but by today’s standards pretty old and out dated. However, when you strap on the killer L glass the images just absolutely sing in good light and/or studio environment. It sucks for sports, totally sucks in low light by todays standard, but otherwise it’s an absolute tank. When Canon comes out with a camera like the Nikon Z7, it will definitely have a new lens mount, so an adapter will still be needed. I would rather just have a Sony A7r III type camera instead.
My main issue with the Sony full frame Mirrorless is they still don’t have a fully articulating screen. It has everything else I want though. I just refuse to drop $3000 unless I’m getting everything I want at this point in my life. I just can’t afford to buy and sell etc.. The Canon 5d Mark II still works fine for the pro work I do occasionaly, and I have the original A7r for light weight fun, and the Nex-6 I still use for my videos… I really want a 4k camera solution for my video review work, but I refuse to get a camera without the selfie screen option built in. That feature is critical to enhance my work flow operations in the field especially, and I want full frame. Otherwise I need expensive monitors and stuff which I refuse to buy. I guess I’m a cheap skate, but Sony is really holding out on that screen for some reason. Hopefully the next gen will have the Sony A99 II fully articulating screen, which is exactly what I want!
I also agree about the dual slots, that is critical for Pro work these days. Nikon clearly left that out to force people to upgrade. The uber Nikon die hards fans will buy up the Z6 and Z7 as second camera bodies, and then upgrade to the Z8 or Z9 when Nikon releases that. We all know the game these cameras companies play by now. They are certainly not fooling me anymore!! It’s the trickle out features one at a time game.
How much you want to bet Nikon already has a Z9 type camera and they purposely decided to make a stripped down model and re-lease that instead. So they will probably keep the same killer Sony sensor as the Z7 and just update the body with maybe a better screen, and add dual slots, make the buffer larger of course or some crap like that. It’s hard to say really, but based on Sony’s roadmap, that seams plausible to me.
Sony knows full well folks like us want the A99 II body in a mirrorless version, but we will have to wait. Killer weather sealing, amazing grip, lcd screen on the top, more manual buttons, etc… It’s coming, but when?
          Ok, rant over 🙂
          All the best,
          Jay
