Sony Nex-5n – High ISO Raw sample pics, ISO 25600

I took  a few High ISO 25600 photos with the Sony Nex-5n, and I think it did a pretty good job overall. There is definitely a lot of noise, but it retains detail a lot better than I expected.

The first image is a shot of my laptop taking with the Nex-5n and the 18-55mm Kit lens at ISO 25600. I also included an ISO 3200 of the same shot for easy comparison 😉  I aslo shot the image in Raw and applied the Adobe Raw Lens profile in Lightroom 3, That helped a bit with the Chromatic Aberrations on the edges, but nothing as far as noise in concerned.

Grilled up some steaks and it was really dark over by the grill. I set the Sony Nex-5n to ISO 25600 and fired away!!  I had the Nex-5n in Best quality Jpeg mode for this image, so there is a bit of in-camera noise reduction applied that results in some jpeg artifacts. It can be seen in the 100% crop, but is really not to bad at all IMO.

  1. You seem to be “on fire” with the Nex 5n… that is quite good… I will not hold the camera in my hands until I come to the US in a month.
For iso 25600 the low light photo with in camera correction looks pretty good. The “grain” could add to the overall look e.g. in your BBQ shot. Sure, not every photo will profit from this especially if it is not intended.
I would like to see how twilight handheld mode stacks up agains high ISO especially in a shot like your BBQ.
Can you achieve crisp and sharp photos with that mode in very low light conditions (tripod vs. heldheld?)?

    1. Sap,
Thanks for your comments and questions!!
The twilight mode is definitely the way to go!! I forgot to use it, because it’s in the scene modes. It was in the ISO settings on the a35. I will try it soon though!! I used it a lot on the a35 and it worked incredible well. Especially handheld, so I would imagine the Nex-5n performing the same way. Stay tuned for a new article on the Twilight Mode Using the Nex-5n!!
      Best,
      Jay
