Sony E-Mount Lens Guide Here >>

Sony Nex-5n and the Sigma E-Mount 19 and 30mm EX DN Lens, Sigma 10-20mm Lens!! Sample Photos, Auto HDR!!

Using the Nex-5n, and a trio of Sigma lenses, I finally got the chance to take a few decent pics at a new water fall area I found today!! The three Sigma lenses I used were the 19 and 30mm f/2.8 EX DN E-Mount lenses, and the Sigma EF-Mount 10-20mm lens with the Fotodiox Lens adapter. Having a blast with all of theses lenses, but the Sigma 19mm in particular today. Its sharp and just the right focal length for a lot of the compositions I used. The Sigma 10-20mm can make a composition out of anything pretty much, and the 30mm is a little harder for landscapes I find, but I did manage to get a few. These sigma lenses are all really sharp, but the 19mm, and 30mm Primes are particularly sharp!!

I went AutoHDR crazy today as the feature works incredible well and it save so much work doing all that Processing after the fact using photomatix or your program of choice. Check out these images and let me know what you think, as i think they look really good for right off the camera!! Obviously I could make these images POP a bit more with some editing in Lightroom, Photoshop or the Nik Filters, but I want you to see what the photos look like right off the camera exported from Lightroom 4!!

AutoHDR – Sample Pics with the Sigma Lenses

I was shooting in P mode with an aperture of ~f/8 – f/16 for most of these. I used the aperture to slow down my shutter speed a bit to get the more silky water. It also makes for better blending of the AutoHDR images. Fast shutter speeds and water usually don’t work well with AutoHDR from my experience anyway. I used the 6EV setting for most of these photos, but I did use 4EV for a few of the darker scenes as 6ev proved to make the images to flat.

This image was shot with the Sigma 10-20mm using the fotodiox lens adapter, and I jacked up the vibrancy a bit in Lightroom 4.

This next image was also shot with the Sigma 10-20mm using the fotodiox lens adapter, but I went for AutoPano Mode so I could show you the whole scene!! I had the Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm for all the shots that I used it with, just to let you know. The waterfall on the left looks a tad angled, but it’s actually facing the camera so it’s not as off as it appears.

Old Generator – Real HDR

I was at a really old radio tower building the other day for work and the old generator was still their! It was old school for sure, but looked like it was used and then just abandoned with all the fluids left in it etc.. Cool looking to say the least and with the Sigma 10-20mm on the Nex-5n it looks great in my opinion. Mind you I did edit this photo from 3 raw files -3,0,+3 and I used Photomatix and Lightroom to process/ edit.

Closing remarks

As you can see from these sample images, the Sony Nex-5n and Sigma lenses performed outstanding in a variety of situations. The images are crisp and loaded with detail, dynamic range, color, and depth. As I said, a bit of editing and the AutoHDR’s would really pop like this last generator shot for example, but right off the camera they are really good in my opinion. Good color, but not totally over saturated to death like you might expect, and the alignment is very good on most of the images. Only a few are a tad soft due to hand holding and the longer +3 exposure blur blending in.

  1. Hi Jay and thanks for the pics. A question, when you shot the waterfall pictures you say “autohdr” do you mean the “auto” setting of the AUTOHDR function or did you set it to an HDR range, and if so what range? Thanks.

    1. Hey Justin,
Thanks for the comments and question!! I really should have put that information, and I’m glad you asked. I had the EV’s set to 6 for almost all of these, but a few of the water scenes looked to flat so I used 4 EV as well. All the Plane images are 6EV. I also floated the exposure comp and aperture to get the desired flowing water effect I wanted.
      Best,
      Jay

      1. Thanks Jay. Will have to try out this function some more. I usually resort to HDR with my A700 slr and manually combine and process in software later. But the results you are getting look great – and I bet a lot easer to obtain. 🙂

        1. Justin,
I used to do the same thing, and you can get better results, but it takes a lot of effort and time. For right off the camera, the AutoHDR function works awesome!! Be sure to try a few different EV combinations to fine tune your result. You can also use the exposure comp to swing your image one way or another as a whole 😉
          Best,
          Jay

      2. Hi im using an nex5r, i already have a sigma 30mm but i cant seem to get shots like these, amazing quality. I never tried using HDR mode so ill try it tomorrow =) but what do you mean by saying ‘Float’ exposure and aperture? How is that done? =) thanks!
