In this hands-on real world style review I will cover in detail the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di USD Zoom Lens using the Sony A7II via the Sony LA-EA3 Lens Adapter. A great combination for those that use the A7-series cameras and want that killer 70-200mm f/2.8 speed and range at a more reasonable price point than the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM Lens.

This lens as you will see in this review, is awesome! The sharpness is off the charts even wide open at f/2.8, so come along for the ride and please feel free to ask questions or comment below the review.

The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di USD Zoom Lens peaked my interest a while back, but with so much Sony gear to review it did not go very far beyond that. Well, since the newer Sony A7 II Series and A6300 cameras have come out, the fast hybrid on sensor AF will now work with 3rd party lenses! This opens the door to using lenses like this Tamron instead of the Sony version, at a fraction of the cost, and still have stellar performance all around.

Some features like Eye-AF won’t work, but you can use the flexible spot at the small size to accommodate portraiture and other precision photography. Another advantage to using the LA-EA3 lens adapter over the LA-EA4 lens adapter, is the much wider af coverage you get. The powerful phase detection area provided by the more expensive LA-EA4 lens adapter is focused around the center area of the total coverage, but the “on sensor” phase detection of the newer cameras is huge in comparison and covers most of the frame.

This camera, lens, and adapter combination was awesome, and proved to be a great combo for the everyday shooter like myself. For sports I would not use this particular combo over a DSLR style camera for professional purposes. I do think I would be able to get some great shots of Layla playing soccer, but if people were paying me money I would need a near 80% hit rate and I don’t think that would be possible with this combo considering the on sensor phase detection focus speed and tracking abilities overall.

A Great Value for the Dollar
The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Lens Is a fantastic value for the dollar and rivals the Sony lenses for optical quality and build. I'm really looking forward to an E-Mount version of this lens in the near future. Even with a lens adapter the autofocus performs excellent for regular photography, but not god enough for tracking high speed subjects such as sports photography. I highly recommend this lens for anybody looking for a 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens that does not need the high speed af tracking abilities. The optical quality is top of the line and the lens build is also fantastic for the money.
