Sony News and Rumors!! New Lenses, Cameras and More..

Sony-pdaf-on-sensor

As you may have heard Sony has changed it’s camera road map big time and has also consolidated it’s line significantly. Canceling the Nex-7n because it was not significantly better enough than the existing Nex-7?? Really? So, will the Nex-7n just get passed over for the Nex-9 or Nex-8 perhaps?

After reading up on several articles throughout the web, it seems clear that Sony is going to focus it’s attention on the Mirrorless DSLR Market, and continue it’s expansion of the Nex camera system to full frame and hybrid models. New crop factor and full frame A-Mount cameras are coming in early 2014.

The hybrid A-E Mount camera is officially going to happen, and has been floating around the web for a long time. According to SonyAlphaRumors, it will be announced at the end of 2014 at Photokina. Bridging the A and E-Mount is and interesting concept, as the lenses are designed for drastically different sensor distances. I’m not sure how Sony is going to address this, but I’m sure it will be innovative as it always seems to be from the history.

As you may recall, I worked on a Full Frame Mirrorless Prototype a while back, using Google Sketch-up. It was more fun than anything, but I was hoping Sony would take some notes on the concept and really listen to what what Pro Users wanted in a mirrorless camera. Check it out over (Click Here), if you would like to see what I came up with a long time ago. It will be very interesting to see what Sony decides to do in the end.

New Sony Sensor??

Bye bye translucent mirror and 1/3rd of a stop light loss. Sony has finally figured out how to get killer focus from PDAF sensors on the actual image sensor. I have a hard time believing this will work as good as the regular PDAF sensor, that were used with the mirror set-up, but time will tell. If Sony is dropping the mirror, they must be good!

Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount)

Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens Overview and Features

The Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is a wide-angle prime lens designed specifically for use on APS-C-sized image sensors, and as such provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm. This lens is compatible with Sony E mirrorless cameras and supports all camera functions, including autofocus and exposure control.

The Distagon design of this lens integrates a floating element design that includes two aspherical elements and three partial-dispersion elements to reduce aberrations and distortion to produce high image clarity, sharpness, and even brightness. Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have also been applied to all lens surfaces to improve light transmission and image contrast by minimizing surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting.

  • Innovative product design: The unmistakeable product design is based on an integrative concept and focuses on essential functional elements. Even the lens hood, typically an accessory, is seamlessly integrated into the overall design.
  • Aspherical design: The aspherical lens design ensures consistent imaging performance throughout theentire focusing range as well as sharpness to the periphery of the image. The asphere’s more complex surface profile can reduce or eliminate spherical aberration
  • Floating Elements Design: Thanks to the use of the latest floating element design principles, optical aberration effects in ZEISS lenses are reduced to a minimum throughout their entire focusing range.
  • Excellent resolution and high contrast:
  • Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating: The optical elements of ZEISS lenses feature T* anti-reflective coating on all surfaces and an optical design that guarantees images of superior brilliance at all times, even in unfavourable lighting conditions.

Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens Overview and Features

The Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is a normal length prime lens designed specifically for use on APS-C-sized image sensors, and as such provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 48mm. This lens is compatible with Sony E mirrorless cameras and supports all camera functions, including autofocus and exposure control.

The Planar design of this lens is a highly successful optical construction that inherently corrects for most aberrations and distortion while offering high overall sharpness and image clarity. Additionally, Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to all lens surfaces to reduce reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce imagery with high contrast and color fidelity.

The physical construction of the lens features a metal lens barrel with rubberized control rings for high precision when working with manual focus. When working in autofocus modes, the focusing system of the lens offers smooth and reliable performance with high precision and control. A rigid metal bayonet mount ensures accurate alignment and a nearly circular nine-blade aperture works to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus highlight quality.

  • Innovative product design: The unmistakeable product design is based on an integrative concept and focuses on essential functional elements. Even the lens hood, typically an accessory, is seamlessly integrated into the overall design.
  • Full compatibility: The lenses are fully-compatible and support all camera functions, including autofocus.
  • Ideal aperture characteristics: he Touit lenses feature a nine-blade iris that closes to create an almost perfectly circular aperture. The effect of this is the creation of a particularly harmonious effect in the out of focus areas of the image (“Bokeh”).
  • Smooth and reliable AF action: The focusing system of the Touit lenses is designed to guarantee robust and smooth autofocusing without any need for compromises or limitations in their optical design.
  • Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating: The optical elements of ZEISS lenses feature T* anti-reflective coating on all surfaces and an optical design that guarantees images of superior brilliance at all times, even in unfavourable lighting conditions.

There is also a Touit 50mm macro lens coming from Zeiss, but I’m waiting for the official specs and images to come out still ;)  Top quality optics is the bottom line as you would expect from Zeiss. These lenses will be worth the money if you require the best possible optic’s and auto-focus. I can’t wait to try one on my Nex-6!

Closing Remarks

That is about it for now, but please stay tuned for the rest of the Disney Vacation Photos and the Rokinon 14mm wide angles lens review I need to finish. I also have some new Sony gear coming, but I missed the delivery do to vacation. Hopefully I will have it soon!
