Sony News: Nex-5n Firmware Update and AF Speed Tests Done, New Nex Lens, and More..

110924_011-A35

Sony just released the new firmware for the Nex-5n and it’s a MUST GET!! Significant AF speed improvements and a bunch of other little things that might help a few people here and there. The full list of changes is below, but the Auto focus is really the meat of the upgrade. The firmware is now available Here >>

And Here is the lest of firmware improvement:

Enhancement of AF response: When subject distance changes enormously.
Improved stability in certain camera operations:
When setting [Lens Compensation: Distortion] “Auto” and [Picture Effect] “Miniature” at the same time.
When setting [Exposure Compensation], [Intelligent AF] operation improves.
Restrictions: only for use with cameras sold in Europe. Not all models are sold in all countries.

This is a great news as the Sony Nex-5n is one of the best cameras I’ve ever reviewed. Especially when you consider the image/ video quality vs size and price!! Check out my Full In-Depth Review of the Nex-5n over Here >>

I have the NEX-5 and it did not work…I guess dealing with 32 vs 64 Kernel on Mac and I have no idea how to get around it. Does anyone know if NEX-5 patch available to be able to shoot in brackets at more than 0.7EV incrementals……..these EV limitations on NEX-5 in bracketing and HDR makes camera worthless

      Hey G2D,

I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro, so I used Michele’s older iMac and it worked fine. There are programs out there to make the Mac work in 32-bit mode I believe, but I luckily found a faster fix myself. I’ll see what I can find.

As far as the HDR bracket limitation goes, your stuck with it for now. You can use manual mode or the exposure compensation to get additional stops of dynamic range, although it is not as convenient or fast. For the most part only super high end cameras seem to have that feature and more than 3 brackets.

      Best,
      Jay
